Mystery Explosion Kills Eight Syrian Soldiers Near Damascus

On August 26, 2025, an unexplained explosion in the countryside south of Damascus killed eight Syrian soldiers and left several others wounded. The blast took place in a military zone near Al Kiswah at a time of heightened Israeli aerial activity in the area.

Local media reported that six soldiers were injured in the same incident, highlighting the growing risks facing Syrian security forces.

The cause of the explosion remains unclear. Syrian state media described it only as a mysterious blast, while other reports noted that Israeli aircraft were flying overhead, raising questions about possible foreign involvement or surveillance.

In a separate incident in Al Dreij, also in the Damascus countryside, three members of the 44th Division of the so called New Syrian Army were killed, including senior commanders.

Several others were injured although the exact number has not yet been confirmed.

These developments follow a series of attacks across Syria in recent weeks. Earlier this month, an Israeli drone strike killed three Syrian soldiers and wounded four more near Damascus. In another case, a landmine left from the civil war detonated at a special forces site, killing two soldiers and injuring three.

The rising frequency of unexplained explosions and targeted drone attacks is causing concern among observers. Unexploded ordnance from years of conflict and suspected foreign strikes continue to endanger both military personnel and civilians. Strategic areas such as Al Kiswah are seen as especially vulnerable given their significance in regional operations.

Local authorities have not yet provided a full explanation for the latest explosions. Syrian forces remain on high alert as they assess the risks and attempt to determine the source of the continuing threats.
